What is New World Screwworm?

New World screwworm (NWS, Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a serious insect that affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and less commonly, people and birds. New World Screwworm flies are metallic blue with three distinct black stripes running down the thorax and have a bright yellow face with red-orange eyes. Larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals and can reach about 2/3 inches in length. Adult screwworm flies are about the size of a common housefly or slightly larger.

Through a massive effort beginning in the 1950s, screwworm was eradicated from the US, Mexico, and Central America. On June 3, 2026 the USDA announced the detection of NWS in the US, in West Texas. For the most current outbreak information, please visit www.screwworm.gov

To support response efforts, MGK has pursued FIFRA Section 2(ee) recommendations for select products across the United States. We continue to work with state agencies and will update the information below as recommendations become available.

What is a FIFRA Section 2(ee) Recommendation?

FIFRA Section 2(ee) allows certain pesticide uses that are not specifically listed on a product label, provided the use site is already included on the label and the use is not otherwise prohibited. Individual states may accept these recommendations to help address emerging pest management needs, such as New World Screwworm response efforts.

This recommendation is permitted under FIFRA Section 2(ee) and has not been submitted to or approved by the EPA. It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. Read and follow all applicable directions for use, precautions and limitations on the product label attached to the container.
